DORA Metrics & Capabilities

For many years, DORA Metrics (DevOps Research and Assessment) have established themselves as a benchmark for measuring the effectiveness of tech teams. But to truly transform metrics into levers for continuous improvement, we need to go beyond simple data observation.

With this in mind, Flow Analytics Pro integrates in its new version (6.2 – June 2025) the generation and analysis of DORA Metrics (Gitlab, Github) as well as the ability to associate them with DORA Capabilities.

Let’s see how it works.

DORA Metrics

DORA Metrics are the result of several years of research conducted by the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) team, founded in 2014 by Dr. Nicole Forsgren, Jez Humble, and Gene Kim – key figures in the DevOps movement.

Their goal: to scientifically identify what distinguishes high-performing software development teams from others. The DORA approach is based on a rigorous quantitative research methodology, including data analysis from thousands of organizations around the world.

Their work has been synthesized in several annual reports (“State of DevOps Report”) and in the reference work “Accelerate” (2018), which has had a profound impact on DevOps culture.

The 4 DORA Metrics

DORA Metrics focus on two main performance areas: delivery speed and operational stability.

Change Lead Time – Average time between a validated commit and its deployment to production.
Measures the effectiveness of the CI/CD pipeline and the ability to deliver quickly.

Deployment Frequency – Number of deployments to production over a given period.
Indicates the delivery cadence and maturity of automation practices.

Change Failure Rate – Percentage of deployments that result in an incident requiring remediation.
Measures the quality and reliability of deliveries.

Failed Deployment Recovery Time – Average time required to restore a service after a failure in production.
Indicator of operational resilience.

These metrics are intentionally simple, technology agnostic, and designed to be comparable across organizations, regardless of industry or tech stack.

DORA Capabilities

While they provide a wealth of insight into the quality of CI/CD, DORA Metrics alone are not enough to understand why a team is performing well or struggling.

This is where DORA Capabilities come in. They help connect measured results (metrics) to concrete practices (culture, tools, processes, automation, etc.). They help us understand which organizational, technical, and cultural factors directly influence DORA Metrics.

A capability is a replicable, observable, and measurable practice that can be implemented or improved by a team. It’s a lever for action: by developing certain capabilities, organizations can improve their DORA Metrics, and therefore their overall performance.

DORA Metrics and DORA Capabilities with Flow Analytics Pro

In its latest version 6.2, Flow Analytics Pro allows organizations to track DORA Metrics and associate them with DORA Capabilities.

DORA Metrics

1 – Access the DORA Metrics loading menu

2 – Select the data source

Flow Analytics Pro allows you to generate DORA metrics from multiple sources – Gitlab, Github, Bitbucket (second half of 2025).

3 – Select the DORA Metrics to generate and the historical period

4 – DORA Metrics Dashboard

You can change the history period (1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, Custom), as well as the cycle (Daily, Weekly, Every 2 weeks, Every 3 weeks, Monthly).

DORA Capabilities

Flow Analytics Pro allows teams to assess their capabilities via the CORE Competency module and launch assessments.

1 – Create the Capabilities Tracking Grid

2 – Launch the Capabilities Assessments

Associate DORA Metrics, DORA Capabilities and Flow Metrics

Flow Analytics Pro allows you to associate DORA Metrics (Gitlab, Github) with a DORA Capabilities assessment and the Flow Metrics of a Jira project/board.

AI for analyzing DORA Metrics & DORA Capabilities

Alice, our AI integrated into Flow Analytics Pro, already provides support for analyzing Flow Metrics and suggesting improvement actions.

The next version of Flow Analytics Pro will also integrate AI-powered analysis of DORA Metrics and DORA Capabilities.

Conclusion

Thanks to the integration of DORA Metrics and DORA Capabilities, Flow Analytics Pro becomes a true assistant for measuring, analyzing and improving your teams’ DevOps approach, capable of linking performance metrics to field practices, identifying the root causes of performance constraints, and supporting your teams in their transformation.
